Shoal
Here we are, diving in one of the deepest Atlantic salmon pits in the middle of the Bonaventure river ZEC in Gaspésie. It is August 2019 and it is a beautiful and warm weather with almost 25 degrees outside. As soon as you get in the water, the temperature is striking. The water coming down from the mountains is about only 7 degrees, but this does not matter anymore when a magnificent school of fish appears. A great inspiration and we are diving into the bottom of the 7 meters pit. It allows to be soundless by not using the traditional scuba diving system, and to be more mobile without all this heavy equipment. We slowly get closer to the school, 5, 4, 3, then 2 meters from these powerful and majestic salmon. The unit consists of more than 40 fish within a range from 40cm to 1.20m. Some of them have fishing flies hung in the mouth. From this close, such as human faces, they all seem to have a different, unique and recognizable face. It has been already 3 minutes that we are underwater and with the heavy camera and the strong current, it is time to regain the surface and finally catch our breath!
