Méduse ombrelle détendue
I had the opportunity to observe this lion's mane jellyfish in Forillon National Park in the Gaspé peninsula during a freedive photo shoot. It is very easy to get close to jellyfish since this animal almost does not react to our presence! However, to take photos close to its "umbrella", you have to be careful because it can quickly become prickly! It is one of the largest jellyfish in the world and can be up to 2 metres large and 30 metres long. It can have up to 800 tentacles. Its color changes with age: pink or yellow for young, orange, red and brown when older. Its sting is painful and in rare cases it can affect the breathing and heart for humans. The largest specimen observed was 2.4 m large and 36.5 m long. Here, this one is 1.1 m large and 13 m long.
